What happened to Octopai

Octopai was an Israeli metadata and lineage company founded in 2016 that built its reputation on a hard problem almost nobody else touched: automatically reading lineage out of legacy, on-premises ETL and reporting stacks. On 14 November 2024, Cloudera announced a definitive agreement to acquire what its own press release called "Octopai's data lineage and catalog platform," with the deal expected to close before the end of that month. Note the wording. Cloudera acquired the platform and the business, not the whole company.

The rebrand is complete. The product is now marketed as "Cloudera Data Lineage (formerly Octopai)" and lives on Cloudera's site under its unified data fabric line, with documentation at docs.cloudera.com/octopai. The clearest signal is the domain itself: octopai.com now returns a 301 redirect to Cloudera's data lineage page. If you are searching for Octopai in 2026, you are evaluating Cloudera.

That matters for a buyer in a practical way rather than a sentimental one. Evaluating Octopai now means evaluating a component inside a large platform vendor's portfolio, with that vendor's sales motion, contract structure, and roadmap priorities attached. Some teams want exactly that. Others started the search because they wanted a focused lineage tool.

What Cloudera Octopai does genuinely well

This is a real product with a real moat, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Its differentiator has always been breadth across the unfashionable parts of the stack. Cloudera markets "more than 60 native integrations" plus a universal connector for non-native systems, and the coverage runs to legacy ETL such as Informatica PowerCenter, SSIS, DataStage, Ab Initio and SAS DI, alongside enterprise BI including Cognos, MicroStrategy, SAP BusinessObjects, Qlik, Tableau and Power BI.

Crucially, it does provide genuine column-level lineage, along with cross-system and intra-system lineage and reverse impact analysis. Anyone telling you Octopai is table-level only is wrong. It also does the thing that is technically hardest in this category, stitching a single graph across systems that have no shared metadata standard, so a column in a Cognos report can be traced back through an SSIS package to an Oracle source.

If your lineage problem is a twenty-year-old warehouse with thousands of SSIS packages and a Cognos estate nobody fully understands, Cloudera Octopai is one of a very small number of products that can actually help, and Datatrail is not one of them. Buy the right tool for that job.

Why teams look for an Octopai alternative

The reasons cluster into three, and only one of them is about the acquisition.

  • The stack does not match. Octopai's depth is in legacy ETL and enterprise BI. If your data lives in Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks, is transformed in dbt, and surfaces in Looker or Power BI, you are paying for connector breadth built for a different era and a different problem.
  • It is bought, not tried. Cloudera publishes no pricing for it, and there is no self-serve signup or free tier. The product page offers a demo request form. Getting to a number means a scoping conversation with a platform vendor, which is a slow path if you want to look at a lineage graph of your own warehouse this week.
  • Platform gravity. A focused tool that becomes one module inside a broad platform tends to be sold as part of that platform. Teams who wanted a lineage product, not a data fabric relationship, start looking elsewhere at renewal.

There is also a scope difference worth naming plainly. Octopai is positioned as lineage, discovery and catalog. It is not a data reliability product: freshness monitoring, volume anomalies and schema-drift alerting are not what it was built to do. If you want lineage and to be told when a table went stale overnight, that is two purchases there and one here.

Legacy coverage versus modern warehouse depth

The honest way to choose is to look at where your lineage actually breaks.

Cloudera Octopai optimizes for heterogeneity. Its value is proportional to how many different, old, incompatible systems you have to stitch together. That breadth is expensive to build and it is priced accordingly.

Worth zooming out, because it explains why this search is harder than it was. The two best-known pure-play data lineage companies have both been absorbed.
