What Select Star does well

Select Star is a genuinely good automated data catalog, and its strengths are broad. It connects to the warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, Postgres) and BI tools (Tableau, Power BI, Looker, Mode, Metabase) most teams run, then does the tedious cataloging work automatically: it generates documentation, scores assets by popularity and usage, infers ERDs from your SQL, and parses query logs into column-level lineage. On top of that it has leaned hard into AI: it reverse-engineers semantic models from BI dashboards and exposes an MCP server so agents and LLMs can query its metadata and lineage.

For an analytics org that wants a discovery layer, a place where anyone can find a table, read its documentation, see how popular it is, and understand what it means, Select Star does that well and quickly. And with the Snowflake acquisition announced in late 2025, its Snowflake alignment is now first-party. If your goal is a catalog and business-facing discovery, it is a credible choice, and this comparison concedes that plainly.

Why teams look for a Select Star alternative

Two reasons come up most often, and one of them is new.

• Independence after the Snowflake acquisition. Snowflake agreed to acquire Select Star in November 2025, and the team is joining the Horizon Catalog effort. That is a good thing for Snowflake-centric shops, and a reason for others to want a tool whose roadmap is not owned by a single warehouse vendor, especially if you run more than one warehouse or want to avoid lock-in.
• Catalog-first, not observability-first. Select Star's center of gravity is discovery and documentation. It builds lineage, but its visual graph is object and table-level, with column-level lineage shown in a side panel rather than rendered directly on the graph, and it is not a freshness and schema-drift monitoring product. If your primary pain is reliability, catching a stale table or a breaking schema change and knowing its blast radius, a catalog is the wrong shape for it.
• Pricing is sales-led. Select Star does not publish transparent pricing; there is a free trial, but a real number means a sales conversation.

Catalog-first versus lineage-first

The honest distinction is what the product is organized around. Select Star is organized around the catalog: the asset, its documentation, its popularity, with lineage as one of the things you can look up about an asset.
