What Atlan does well
Atlan is a genuinely well-built product and it is not close to being a weak competitor. It positions itself as an AI-native context layer, connecting Snowflake, Databricks, dbt, Tableau and a large certified connector library into a single traversable metadata graph that both people and AI agents can query. Its active metadata engine parses real query activity and dbt runs continuously, which means the catalog largely populates itself instead of depending on humans to document tables that nobody documents.
It also has real column-level lineage out of the box across Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Tableau, and Power BI. Anyone claiming Atlan does not do column lineage is wrong. On the governance side it has the credentials enterprises ask for, including recognition as a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data and Analytics Governance in 2026 and in the Forrester Wave for Data Governance in Q3 2025. The interface is polished, collaboration is a first-class concern, and for an organization running a governance program across many teams, that combination is hard to assemble any other way.

Rarely because it lacks features. Usually because of shape, price, and time to value.

Atlan publishes no price on its website or on AWS Marketplace; you request a quote scoped to your connectors, assets and seats, with AI capabilities priced as an add-on. - A catalog is a program, not a switch. Even with automated metadata, getting value out of a catalog means agreeing on ownership, glossary terms, certification, and who curates what. Atlan cites production deployment in roughly four to six weeks, which is fast for the category and still a project with a plan and a budget behind it.
- Catalog-first, not reliability-first. Atlan is organized around discovery, context, and governance. Lineage is one of the things you can look up. If your actual pain is that a table went stale overnight or that you cannot tell what a column change will break, you are buying a large platform to get at one capability inside it.

Yes. Atlan provides column-level lineage out of the box across sources including Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Tableau, and Power BI, built by its active metadata engine parsing real query activity and dbt model runs rather than by manual mapping. Column lineage is not a gap in Atlan. The meaningful difference against DataTrail is that Atlan is organized around the catalog, while DataTrail is organized around the lineage graph and change impact.

Atlan's own filed rate card puts the platform at £110,000 a year for the Advanced tier and £300,000 for Enterprise, roughly 148,700 and 405,500 dollars, before any user license. Seats are charged on top at £2,388 per Admin, £1,188 per Insights user, £588 per Member and £60 per Guest, and connectors beyond the bundled five cost £1,000 a month each. Is a data catalog the same as data lineage?
No. A data catalog is an inventory: what tables exist, what they mean, who owns them, and whether they are trustworthy. Data lineage is the map of how data moves between them, which upstream fields feed which downstream ones. Catalogs usually include some lineage as a feature, but a lineage-first tool resolves the graph column by column and uses it to compute what a change will break.
