A data lineage diagram tool draws the path your data takes from source to dashboard, and the tools that do it fall into four groups that are not interchangeable. Drawing tools such as Lucidchart, Visio and draw.io let you make the picture by hand for $0 to $10 per user per month, and it starts going stale immediately. Catalogs such as Collibra, Alation, Atlan and Dataedo generate it from metadata across a wide estate, at verified list prices from $18,000 to $170,000 a year. Snowflake, Databricks and dbt already produce one for free inside their own boundary. Warehouse-native tools like Datatrail read query history to build a column-level map that refreshes itself. Decide first whether the diagram has to stay true after you draw it, because that single question eliminates most of this list.
What a data lineage diagram actually costs
Almost every article in this category either skips price entirely or quotes a range with no source. These figures were read from live vendor pricing pages, transactable AWS Marketplace rate cards and Microsoft's public retail price API, each on the date shown. Where a vendor publishes nothing, we say so rather than estimating.

Three people on Lucidchart Team is $360 a year. Collibra's published 12-month rate card is $170,000. Both produce a diagram of where your data comes from. What separates them is whether anybody has to redraw it.
Dataedo names $18,000, $24,000 and $32,000 a year on its own pricing page. Alation and Collibra publish only on AWS Marketplace. Atlan publishes nothing, anywhere, including on the Marketplace listing it maintains.
Collibra lists $170,000, $340,000 and $510,000 for 12, 24 and 36 months. That is exactly linear. Any multi-year discount is a concession you negotiate, not a rate you are offered.
Four different products all answer to data lineage diagram tool
Most regret in this category comes from comparing tools that were never competing for the same job. Work out which sentence below is yours before you take a demo, because it removes most of the shortlist for you.
You open a canvas and draw boxes and arrows. It is cheap, it is fast, and the picture looks exactly how you want it because you made every decision. It is also a snapshot of your understanding rather than a reading of your warehouse, so it is correct the day you draw it and drifting from the day after. Right answer for a design review, an architecture proposal or a one-off audit response. Wrong answer for anything you have to keep true.
A catalog connects to your sources, scans metadata, parses SQL and ETL definitions, and renders the graph it finds. Breadth is the point: these reach systems no warehouse-native tool sees, which is why they win regulated programs. The costs are money and time. Verified list prices run from $18,000 to $170,000 a year, and the rollout is measured in quarters because somebody has to configure connectors and curate what comes back.
Often yes, and checking should be the first thing you do. Snowflake and Databricks both capture lineage automatically and draw it in their own console at no separate license fee. The limit is the platform boundary: the diagram is excellent inside the walls and stops at them, so it will not follow a column into Tableau or back to the ingestion job. Buying a third-party tool for a genuinely single-platform estate is a common and expensive mistake.
dbt already generates a DAG from your manifest on every build, and OpenMetadata and DataHub give you a full catalog with column-level lineage for no license fee. Neither is free in the sense that matters to a budget. dbt only knows what is in dbt, so anything created outside the project is invisible. The open source catalogs need somebody to run ingestion, storage, search and upgrades, which is a salary, not a subscription.

Datatrail
From $99 / mo (planned)We built Datatrail because the diagram is the deliverable but the refresh is the product. It connects to Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift or Databricks with a read-only role, parses the query history and your dbt graph, and draws a lineage map down to the column rather than the table. Because it reads query logs it follows data past the dbt boundary, into the ad hoc CTAS somebody ran last quarter that no manifest knows about. The same graph then drives impact analysis, so you can ask what breaks if I drop this column before you merge instead of after a dashboard goes blank. Honest limits: it maps the warehouse and the BI layer that reads it, so if the diagram you owe an auditor has to include a mainframe, a SAP extract and twelve file shares, a program-scale catalog covers ground we do not.
Lucidchart
$0, $9 or $10 per user / moFor a single diagram that has to exist by Thursday, a drawing tool beats every automated platform on this page, ours included, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling something. Lucidchart is the most common choice: read from its own pricing page on 4 September 2026, Free is $0 and caps you at 3 editable documents and 75 shapes per document, Individual is $9 per month billed annually, and Team is $10 per user per month billed annually. Visio and draw.io occupy the same slot, and Mermaid does it in text if you would rather keep the diagram in version control next to the code. The catch is not the price and not the picture. It is that the diagram is accurate on the day you draw it and quietly wrong a sprint later, because nothing connects it to the warehouse it describes.
Dataedo
$18,000 to $32,000 / yrDataedo is the one vendor in this comparison that publishes a real price on its own website rather than making you go to AWS Marketplace or a sales call. Read on 4 September 2026, the three annual plans are Essentials at $18,000, Data Lineage at $24,000 and Data Quality at $32,000, all with a minimum of 3 editors, unlimited viewers, unlimited integrations and unlimited connectors. That transparency is worth a lot when you are building a business case. Its diagrams are genuinely good and it is unusually strong on estates that automated parsers struggle with, partly because it lets people document lineage by hand where no machine-readable source exists. That is also the trade: some of the graph is only as current as the person maintaining it.
Alation
$60,000 / yr, starting atAlation builds lineage largely from query log ingestion, which is the right technique and the same family of approach we use. It is a full data intelligence platform, so the diagram arrives inside search, stewardship, glossary and governance workflow. Its AWS Marketplace rate card, re-read on 4 September 2026, sells one dimension named Alation Data Catalog at $60,000.00 for 12 months, quantity 1, in a unit type called Units that the listing never defines. The description on that same dimension reads "Subscription to Alation Data Catalog starting at", so the vendor is telling you plainly that the published figure is a floor rather than a quote. Collibra
$170,000 / yr listCollibra produces the most complete lineage diagrams here when the estate is genuinely enterprise: it parses SQL, stored procedures, ETL tools and BI layers, which is what you need when the picture an auditor wants starts in a source system nobody has logged into since 2014. It is a governance program rather than a tool, with the rollout and the price to match. Its Marketplace listing carries the highest verified figure in this comparison, $170,000.00 for 12 months, and the 24 and 36 month terms are $340,000.00 and $510,000.00, which is exactly two and three times the annual rate with no multi-year discount at all. Atlan
No published priceAtlan draws the cleanest lineage graph of the enterprise catalogs and it is the one non-technical stakeholders tend to engage with, which matters more than feature checklists once a governance program depends on adoption. On price it is the outlier in the other direction. Checked again on 4 September 2026, Atlan has an AWS Marketplace listing that carries no rate card at all: no dimensions, no dollar amount, only a private offer. Microsoft Purview
$0.0165 per asset per dayIf your data lives in Azure and your dashboards are Power BI, Purview draws a lineage diagram across that estate without you buying anything new, and it is the only platform here whose rates you can query from a public API before speaking to a salesperson. Read from Microsoft's Azure retail price API on 2 September 2026, catalog and classification meters at $0.0165 per asset per day, with governance processing units at $15, $60 and $240. Two warnings. Cost scales with how many assets you point it at rather than how many people use it, so a wide scan gets expensive quietly. And lineage coverage outside Microsoft-supported sources is thin. Databricks Unity Catalog
Included, Premium tierUnity Catalog captures column-level lineage automatically at runtime and draws it in Catalog Explorer, at no separate license fee. The usual claim that it is free deserves a footnote: it requires the Premium tier, and read from the Azure retail price API, Premium Jobs Compute runs $0.30 per DBU-hour against Standard at $0.15, exactly double. Two documented limits nobody mentions in comparison articles. Lineage is not preserved when you rename a catalog, schema, table, view or column, which is the exact moment you most want it. And the system tables keep a rolling one-year window while Catalog Explorer and the REST API retain indefinitely but only from 1 September 2024 onward. Detail in Unity Catalog lineage.
Snowflake Horizon
Included with creditsSnowflake exposes lineage through Horizon and the ACCESS_HISTORY view, with no separate license line, so you pay only for the credits you already buy. On AWS US East, on demand credits are $2.00 Standard, $3.00 Enterprise, $4.00 Business Critical and $6.00 VPS, read from Snowflake's own Service Consumption Table. dbt Explorer
Included with dbtIf every transformation you care about is a dbt model, you already have a lineage diagram and it is free. The DAG in dbt docs and dbt Explorer is generated from the manifest on every build, so it never goes stale and it never lies about the models it knows. The word doing the work in that sentence is knows. The manifest describes the dbt project and nothing else, so a table created by a stored procedure, an ad hoc CTAS or an ingestion tool is invisible, and the graph stops at the model rather than following a column into a dashboard. OpenMetadata / DataHub
$0 license, real engineering timeBoth are genuinely capable open source catalogs with lineage diagrams, both parse SQL to build column-level edges, and the license costs nothing. Budget the engineering instead: you are running the ingestion framework, the metadata store, the search index and the upgrades. DataHub publishes an unusually honest list of what its sqlglot-based parser cannot handle, which is worth reading before you commit, and every SQL-parsing tool has an equivalent list, ours included. Monte Carlo
$50,000 / yrMonte Carlo draws lineage, but the diagram is a triage aid rather than the product: the platform is built around detecting that something already broke and then showing you what is downstream of it. If the reason you want a diagram is that a dashboard went wrong at 7am and nobody knows why, that framing is correct and Monte Carlo is very good at it. Its Marketplace listing sells one dimension, Monte Carlo Credit, at $50,000.00 for 12 months, read 26 August 2026, and never defines how much monitoring one credit buys. Why the diagram on the wiki is wrong
Almost every data team has a lineage diagram already. It is a PNG on a Confluence page, somebody made it for a review eighteen months ago, and nobody trusts it.
The reason is not laziness. A hand-drawn diagram records what one person understood on one afternoon, and a warehouse changes faster than anybody maintains a drawing. Somebody adds a model. An analyst runs a CTAS to unblock a deadline and it becomes load-bearing. An ingestion job starts landing a new table. None of that reaches the picture, so the picture decays until it is worse than nothing, because a confidently wrong diagram sends people looking in the wrong place during an incident.
That is why the useful question is not which tool draws the nicest graph. It is where the graph comes from. A diagram generated from query history and dbt artifacts is a reading of what actually ran, so it is current by construction, and it can be wrong only in the ways your warehouse is wrong. A diagram drawn by hand is an opinion.
Datatrail takes the second approach. Connect a read-only role, and it parses query history and your dbt graph into column-level lineage and renders it as a lineage map you can trace in either direction. Because it reads logs rather than only manifests, it catches the transformations that live outside dbt. One honest caveat, because it decides real purchases. If the diagram you owe somebody has to start in a mainframe, cross an ETL tool nobody has upgraded in a decade, and end in a regulatory report, a program-scale catalog reaches ground we do not. Buy the catalog. If the diagram has to cover a cloud warehouse, the models on top of it and the dashboards that read it, and it has to still be true next quarter, that is the job we built for.

What is the best data lineage diagram tool?
It depends on whether the diagram has to update itself. For a one-off picture for a slide or an audit response, a drawing tool like Lucidchart, Visio or draw.io is the right answer and costs $0 to $10 per user per month. For a diagram that stays true as the warehouse changes, you need a tool that reads the warehouse: Snowflake Horizon or Databricks Unity Catalog if you are on one platform, dbt Explorer if everything is in dbt, Datatrail for column-level lineage across a warehouse and its BI layer, and Collibra or Alation when the picture has to reach far past the warehouse.
How do you create a data lineage diagram?
Three ways, and they are not interchangeable. You can draw it by hand in a diagramming tool from what you know about the pipeline. You can generate it from metadata, by pointing a catalog at your sources so it parses SQL, ETL definitions and BI models. Or you can derive it from the warehouse itself, by reading query history and dbt artifacts so the graph reflects what actually ran rather than what someone believed was running. Only the third stays accurate without a human maintaining it.
How much does a data lineage tool cost?
Verified US list prices span an enormous range for what looks like the same picture. Drawing tools are $0 to $10 per user per month. Dataedo publishes $18,000 to $32,000 a year on its own site. AWS Marketplace rate cards show Sifflet at $48,000, Monte Carlo at $50,000, Alation at $60,000 and Collibra at $170,000 a year. Atlan publishes no price anywhere. Snowflake, Databricks and dbt include lineage at no separate license fee. So a three-person team choosing between Lucidchart Team and Dataedo Essentials is choosing between about $360 and $18,000 a year.
What is the difference between a data lineage diagram and a data flow diagram?
A data flow diagram is a design artifact that shows how a system is intended to move data between processes and stores. A data lineage diagram is an evidence artifact that shows how data actually moved, derived from what really ran. The distinction matters in an audit: a flow diagram tells a regulator what you designed, and a lineage diagram tells them what happened. Teams get into trouble when they present a hand-drawn flow diagram as lineage, because nothing connects it back to the systems it describes.
Can you make a data lineage diagram in Visio or draw.io?
Yes, and for a single diagram that is often the fastest route. Visio, draw.io, Lucidchart and Mermaid all produce a clean picture, and Mermaid has the advantage of living as text in your repository so the diagram is versioned next to the code. The limitation is identical across all of them: the diagram has no connection to your warehouse, so it captures your understanding on one day. If it has to be right in six months, something has to regenerate it from metadata.
Do data lineage diagram tools show column-level lineage?
Some do and the difference is large. Table-level lineage says the orders table feeds the revenue mart, which narrows a problem to a few hundred columns. Column-level lineage says orders.discount_pct feeds revenue_mart.net_revenue and three named dashboards, which is an answer. Databricks Unity Catalog, Datatrail, Alation, Collibra and DataHub all build column-level edges. Many tools that market themselves on lineage visualization stop at the table, so ask specifically, and ask to see it on a query with a CTE and a window function rather than a demo dataset.
Is there a free data lineage diagram tool?
Yes, with real trade-offs. dbt generates a DAG from your manifest at no cost if your transformations are in dbt. Snowflake and Databricks both include lineage in the platform you already pay for. OpenMetadata, DataHub and Marquez are open source with no license fee, though you carry the engineering cost of running them. Mermaid and draw.io are free for hand-drawn diagrams. What none of the free options give you is a column-level graph across more than one system that maintains itself, which is where paid tools earn the difference.
Do you get a discount for a multi-year data lineage contract?
Not at list price, which surprises most buyers. Where a vendor publishes multi-year terms on its rate card, the longer terms are exactly linear. Collibra runs $170,000 for 12 months, $340,000 for 24 and $510,000 for 36, precisely two and three times the annual figure. Anomalo and Informatica show the same linear pattern. Several vendors offer only a 12-month term at all. So the published rate card gives you nothing for a longer commitment, and any multi-year discount you get is a concession you negotiated, not a standard rate.
