Every rate below was read from Microsoft's public price API on 9 September 2026, not estimated. It also settles the claim repeated in most Databricks cost articles that Premium runs about 1.5x Standard. Measured across the SKUs that exist on both tiers, the real multiplier runs from 1.00x to 3.14x.

A Databricks DBU costs between $0.07 and $0.95 per hour depending on the compute SKU and the account tier. On Azure Databricks in East US, read from Microsoft's retail price API on 9 September 2026, the rates that matter most are Jobs Compute at $0.15 Standard and $0.30 Premium, All-purpose Compute at $0.40 and $0.55, and SQL Analytics at $0.22 on both tiers. The DBU rate is the Databricks software charge only: the virtual machines underneath are billed separately by your cloud provider. Unity Catalog carries no line item of its own, so the true cost of governance is the Premium tier delta applied to every DBU you burn, which is 100 percent on Jobs Compute and zero on SQL Analytics.

There is no single tier multiplier

The widely repeated "Premium is about 1.5x Standard" is not a number that exists in the price feed. The spread is 1.00x to 3.14x. Quoting one multiplier for a whole account is only accurate if the account runs one SKU.

Governance is free on SQL, double on jobs

SQL Analytics is $0.22 on both tiers, so a team living in SQL warehouses upgrades to Premium and pays nothing more for it. A team whose spend is scheduled Jobs Compute pays exactly twice as much per DBU-hour.

The worst ratio hides on the cheapest SKU

Jobs Light Compute goes from $0.07 to $0.22, a 3.14x jump. Because both numbers are small, it rarely gets audited, and it is the SKU where the tier decision multiplies spend the hardest.

The SKUs with no Standard price to compare against

Serverless, Delta Live Tables, model training and the compliance add-ons appear in the feed only as Premium rates. For these there is no tier choice to make and no multiplier to compute: the Premium rate is the price. The effective date is the date Microsoft's feed says the rate took effect, which is a useful signal of how recently a SKU was introduced or repriced.

Two of those rates are new enough that most cost articles predate them. The Mission Critical tier of the Enhanced Security and Compliance add-on ($0.15 per DBU-hour) and Disaster Recovery Replication ($0.02 per GB) both carry an effective date of June 2026. Clean Rooms is the outlier in the whole feed: it is the only Databricks meter priced per collaborator per day rather than per DBU, at $50.00.

How much does Databricks cost per DBU in practice

The rate card only becomes a budget once you multiply it by consumption, and consumption is where the tier decision either costs nothing or doubles the bill. Three worked examples, all using the Azure East US rates above and all counting the Databricks software charge only.

A small pipeline team. Say 2,000 Jobs Compute DBU-hours a month. On Standard that is $300 a month. On Premium it is $600. The tier delta alone is $3,600 a year, and that is the real price of Unity Catalog for this team, even though Unity Catalog itself has no price.

A mid-size platform. Say 20,000 Jobs Compute DBU-hours plus 5,000 All-purpose DBU-hours a month. Standard: $3,000 plus $2,000, so $5,000. Premium: $6,000 plus $2,750, so $8,750. The delta is $3,750 a month, or $45,000 a year, and notice that almost all of it comes from the jobs line rather than the notebooks line.

An analytics-first organization. Say 15,000 SQL Analytics DBU-hours a month and little else. Standard: $3,300. Premium: $3,300. The tier delta is zero. This team gets Unity Catalog, access controls and audit logs for no incremental DBU cost at all, which is the opposite of what a flat 1.5x rule of thumb would have predicted.

The lesson is that the governance tier is priced against your workload mix, not against your headcount or your data volume. Before you accept or reject Premium on cost grounds, pull your own consumption by SKU and apply the multipliers in the table. Two organizations with identical Databricks bills can face wildly different upgrade costs.

One caveat that matters for every number on this page: the DBU rate is not your bill. The virtual machines, disks and storage the cluster runs on are billed separately by the cloud provider, and for many workloads that infrastructure line is comparable to or larger than the DBU line. If cloud and SaaS spend across the business is the actual problem rather than Databricks specifically, that is a job for a read-only cloud cost management platform rather than a per-SKU rate table.

Does Unity Catalog cost extra?

Unity Catalog has no separate charge. There is no per-asset fee, no per-user fee and no governance line item, and every article that says so is telling the truth. The claim is still misleading, because Unity Catalog requires the Premium tier, and the Premium tier reprices every DBU you burn.

So the honest way to state the cost of Databricks governance is not a dollar figure at all. It is a formula: your monthly DBU consumption, broken down by SKU, multiplied by the tier delta for each SKU. That is why the same question gets three defensible answers ranging from "it is genuinely free" to "it doubled our compute bill", and all three answers are correct for the team giving them.

It is worth being equally clear about what the Premium tier buys, because the governance itself is good. Unity Catalog gives you a three level namespace, centralized access control, audit logs, classification, and automatic column-level lineage across tables, views, notebooks, jobs and dashboards, aggregated across every workspace on the metastore. For a single-platform Databricks estate that is frequently enough, and paying the tier delta is the right call.

The limits are documented by Databricks rather than alleged by us, and they are worth reading before you decide the native graph covers you. Lineage is not preserved when you rename a catalog, schema, table, view or column. Column lineage is not captured when the source or target is referenced as a path rather than a table name. User-defined functions can obscure the column mapping. The lineage system tables keep a rolling one-year window, while the Catalog Explorer view is retained indefinitely but only from 1 September 2024 onward. The DBU spend nobody audits: jobs that feed nothing

What we do have an opinion about is the one category of DBU waste that rate tuning cannot reach. Cluster right-sizing, auto-termination and moving interactive work onto Jobs Compute are all well covered and you should do all three. They make each hour cheaper. They do nothing about hours that should not run at all.

In most estates of any age there is a tail of scheduled work that still runs every night to refresh tables nobody reads. A dashboard was retired, a model was replaced, an experiment ended, and the pipeline that fed it was never switched off because nobody could prove it was safe to switch off. Every one of those runs bills DBUs at full rate forever. Finding them is not a cost problem, it is a lineage problem: you need to know, for each table, what actually reads it downstream, all the way into the BI layer where the consumption really ends.

How much does a DBU cost in Databricks?

Is Databricks Premium 1.5x the cost of Standard?

SQL Analytics is $0.22 on both tiers, so there is no premium at all. All-purpose Compute is 1.38x. Jobs Compute is exactly 2.00x. Jobs Light Compute is 3.14x. Your effective multiplier depends entirely on which SKUs your workload mix actually burns.

What is a DBU in Databricks?

A DBU, or Databricks Unit, is a normalized unit of processing capability billed per hour. It is not a fixed amount of CPU or memory: each instance type consumes DBUs at a published rate per hour that it runs, so a larger VM burns DBUs faster. Your Databricks bill is DBUs consumed multiplied by the DBU rate for the SKU and tier, and that sits on top of a separate cloud infrastructure bill for the VMs and storage.

Does Unity Catalog cost extra?

Unity Catalog has no separate line item, no per-asset fee and no per-user fee, so the common claim that it is free is literally true. It is not free in effect. Unity Catalog requires the Premium tier, so the real cost of governance is the tier delta applied to every DBU you burn. How do I reduce Databricks DBU cost?

The three levers that move the number most are picking the right SKU for the job, right-sizing and auto-terminating clusters, and deleting work nobody consumes. The first two are well covered everywhere. The third is where most of the recoverable waste sits: pipelines that still run nightly to refresh tables that no dashboard, model or query has read in months. Finding those requires lineage that reaches past the warehouse into the BI layer.

Is Jobs Compute cheaper than All-purpose Compute?

Yes, substantially, and moving scheduled work off all-purpose clusters is usually the single largest DBU saving available. On Azure Premium, Jobs Compute is $0.30 per DBU-hour against $0.55 for All-purpose Compute, so identical work costs about 45 percent less when it runs as a job rather than on an interactive cluster. On Standard the gap is wider still, $0.15 against $0.40.

Does the DBU price include the cloud VM cost?

No. The DBU rate is the Databricks software charge. The virtual machines, managed disks, public IPs and storage that the cluster runs on are billed separately by your cloud provider at their own rates. A realistic all-in estimate is the DBU rate plus the underlying compute rate for the instance type, which is why two teams burning identical DBUs can still see very different bills.

Are Databricks DBU prices the same on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud?

No. The rates on this page are Azure Databricks list prices for East US, read from Microsoft's retail price API, because Azure publishes them in a machine-readable feed that anyone can query. Databricks on AWS and Google Cloud is billed by Databricks directly and the rate card differs by cloud, by region and by tier availability. Check your own cloud and region before you build a budget on any published figure.

What is the cheapest Databricks SKU?

Standard Jobs Light Compute at $0.07 per DBU-hour is the cheapest rate in the Azure feed, but it is intended for lightweight non-critical jobs and it carries the harshest tier penalty: the Premium equivalent is $0.22, a 3.14x jump. Every rate on this page came from the Azure Retail Prices API, which is public, needs no key and returns the same list prices Microsoft bills against. We filtered it to Azure Databricks, East US, Consumption pricing, on 9 September 2026. The call returned 43 SKUs, each carrying a retail price, a unit of measure and an effective start date.

Two limits are worth stating plainly. These are Azure list prices for one region, and Databricks on AWS and Google Cloud is billed by Databricks directly on a different card, so do not carry these figures across clouds. And list is not what a large account pays: committed-use discounts are negotiated and are not visible in any public feed.
