Alation Data Lineage Cost, Column-Level Lineage Pricing and Limits by Source

Alation's two public price lists disagree on whether column-level lineage costs extra. We read both, plus the limits in Alation's own documentation, so you can check a quote before you sign it, or map the same warehouse here with a read-only role.

Alation sells data lineage two ways, depending on which public price list you read. On the US federal GSA schedule, column-level lineage is a separate "Column Level Lineage (Upgrade)" at $12,090.68 per connector per year, on top of $24,181.36 per connector and a $251,889.17 Enterprise cloud server that includes two connectors. On the UK G-Cloud 15 card dated 29 January 2026, column-level lineage, business lineage and impact analysis are ticked in all four tiers, from $60k a year. Ask which model your quote uses. DataTrail includes column-level lineage on every plan, from $708 a year.

// HOW THE GRAPH GETS BUILT

How Alation builds data lineage

Alation's lineage runs on what it calls Lineage V3, the lineage service introduced in version 2021.4. It collects lineage from four places: metadata extraction, query log ingestion (QLI), Compose query history and the public APIs. The one that does most of the work is QLI. In Alation's words, "for most data sources, automatic lineage calculation requires query history data extracted and ingested with QLI." SAP HANA and Databricks Unity Catalog are the exceptions, reading lineage straight from system tables during metadata extraction.

Column detail is not uniform. The documentation says "column-level lineage is dependent upon both the data source and the data source connector", and some connectors only calculate it after an admin sets a feature flag. Where automation stops, admins can draw lineage by hand with Dataflow objects once a Server Admin enables Manual Lineage Curation. If publishing a manual edit fails, Alation warns that "all the changes will be lost".

Since 2024.1.2 Alation also builds column-level lineage from the custom SQL behind Tableau and Power BI data sources, but only when the upstream sources are cataloged through its connectors and cross-source lineage is configured. Otherwise the upstream objects "could appear as temporary (TMP) nodes". The platform, seat and connector price list is on our Alation pricing page. This page stays on lineage.

// US GSA SCHEDULE, READ 19 OCTOBER 2026

Alation column-level lineage price on the US federal schedule

alation.com sends every pricing question to a contact form. Its resellers, though, file an itemized US dollar price list under the federal GSA schedule, and on that list column-level lineage is its own line, sold per connector. These are the lines a lineage buyer needs.

Line item Part or holder Per year What it is
Column Level Lineage (Upgrade), Cloud CL-ENTR-SUB-SW-164 $12,090.68 Listing text says it "enables a single Alation connector to extract column level lineage"
Column Level Lineage (Upgrade), Enterprise Edition ENTR-SUB-SW-406 $12,090.68 The same upgrade under the Enterprise Edition part number
Column Level Lineage, second schedule holder Merlin International $11,848.87 Also offered at $987.41 a month on contract 47QTCA19D008R
Connector, per data source type Connector $24,181.36 Each source type beyond the ones bundled with the server
Enterprise Edition Cloud Server Server $251,889.17 Includes 2 connectors
Premium Edition Cloud Server Server $176,322.42 Includes 2 connectors
Universe Edition Cloud Server Server $377,833.75 Includes "either 2 connectors, or 1 SAP BW, or 1 connector with CLL upgrade"

GSA prices are ceilings for federal buyers, and commercial quotes are negotiated. The Vertosoft lines are on contract GS-35F-688GA. The AWS Marketplace listing, re-read the same day, still sells one dimension named Alation Data Catalog at $60,000.00 for 12 months, with no lineage dimension of its own.

What the upgrade line means for a quote

The lineage upgrade is half the price of a connector, so on the federal list column-level lineage adds 50 percent to every source you want traced at column level. Table-level lineage needs no upgrade. On five sources the upgrades alone, $60,453.40, cost slightly more than the whole $60,000 AWS entry listing.

The Universe server is the one line that bundles lineage: it includes "either 2 connectors, or 1 SAP BW, or 1 connector with CLL upgrade". That is the clearest sign that, on this list, column-level lineage is a priced entitlement and not a default.

Alation lineage on the 2026 UK price card

The newer document tells a different story. The pricing PDF that reseller CDW filed for the "Alation Agentic Data Intelligence Platform (ACS)" on the UK Digital Marketplace prices four tiers by connectors and objects, and the row "Lineage: Column level, business, impact analysis" is ticked in every one of them. The Essentials price of $60k lines up with the $60,000 AWS listing.

Tier Per year, as filed Connectors Max objects Column-level lineage
Essentials $60k 2 50k Ticked
Deluxe $160k Unlimited 500k Ticked
Enterprise $290k Unlimited 5M Ticked
Enterprise+ $465k Unlimited 50M Ticked

The table in the filing is an image, and its tick marks sit slightly out of line with the rows. We read the lineage row as ticked in all four tiers. Confirm it in writing before you rely on it.

What you pay for instead

On the tiered card the meters are connectors and objects. Alation's docs say objects ingested through any connector count toward your licensed object volume, so a large warehouse can push you up a tier.

Core and enhanced connectors

Core connectors are included in all tiers within each tier's connector limit. Enhanced connectors "require a separate entitlement", which is where an extra line can still appear.

What to ask in writing

Is column-level lineage included for every connector on the order? Which of our sources are core and which enhanced? What is the object cap, and what happens when we cross it?

Alation's own news release of 17 September 2026, announcing six AIOS products including agent lineage tracing, says they are all "part of Alation's all-inclusive pricing with no new contracts required". That points the same way as the UK card. The federal list has simply not caught up, or a federal quote still follows the older per-connector model.

// FROM ALATION'S DOCUMENTATION, READ 19 OCTOBER 2026

Alation lineage limits by source, in Alation's own words

Alation documents its lineage edges plainly, and these are the ones that change what a buyer sees on the graph. The quoted sentence on each card comes from Alation's lineage, connector and support matrix pages. Every SQL-parsing lineage tool has a list like this, ours included, so the useful question is whether these rows touch your stack.

Temporary tables

"By default, Alation's lineage parser does not detect column information for temporary tables."

On Alation Cloud Service, support has to switch it on. On customer-managed instances the docs say column-level details for temporary tables are not available.

SELECT * and INSERT INTO

"Column-level lineage will not be shown for SELECT * or INSERT INTO type of queries."

Two of the most common load patterns in a warehouse produce table-level lineage only.

ALTER TABLE

"In the same session as the corresponding CREATE TABLE query."

Lineage from an ALTER only appears when it ran in the same session as the CREATE. On-premise it is table level only.

Stored procedures

"Oracle generates table-level lineage only."

Procedure lineage is cloud only, from version 2024.3.3, for nine sources. SELECT * inside a procedure can drop column detail.

Looker

"Column-level lineage is supported for Databricks and Google BigQuery only when the database column and explore field name are same."

Renamed fields in LookML, which most models have, break the column link.

SSRS

"Column-level lineage is supported only for SQL Server when the field names are same."

Same name-matching rule as Looker, on SQL Server only.

Power BI

"Does not support on-premise instances of Power BI, Power BI on GCC High."

That is the Power BI Scanner connector, which also excludes China Cloud. The older Power BI on Azure connector has no lineage, and datasets changed through XMLA endpoints lose fields, measures and lineage.

dbt on Databricks

"Databricks on AWS supports table-level lineage and does not support column-level lineage."

Through the dbt connector. Databricks on Google Cloud gets table-level lineage only, from Compose queries.

Query logs

"For most data sources, automatic lineage calculation requires query history data extracted and ingested with QLI."

Query log ingestion has to be configured and scheduled per source before the graph fills in.

Where Alation lineage is strong

The cloud warehouses are well covered. Alation's connector support matrix lists query log ingestion with table and column level lineage for Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift (provisioned and serverless), Databricks on AWS and PostgreSQL. Tableau is covered at table and column level, and so is dbt through the Gen2 connector. Add SAP HANA, Oracle and SQL Server stored procedures, and Alation traces more of an older enterprise estate than most lineage-first tools.

The gaps cluster in two places: load patterns (SELECT *, INSERT INTO, temporary tables, ALTER in a different session) and BI tools where lineage depends on field names matching. If your dbt models and dashboards rename columns, test those paths in the proof of concept before you price them. Our data lineage tools compared page covers how other vendors handle the same cases.

Buy Alation when

Hundreds of analysts need a catalog they will actually search, stewards need a glossary and certification, and lineage is one feature of a company-wide data intelligence program.

Buy a lineage-first tool when

The question is what breaks if this column changes, the estate is a cloud warehouse with dbt and dashboards, and the budget is five figures or less. See impact analysis and column-level lineage.

Run both when

Governance owns Alation and the platform team needs live lineage with freshness and schema alerts today. A read-only connection does not touch the catalog program.

// FIRST HOUR

How to see your lineage before the Alation contract is signed

1
Grant a read-only role

On Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks or Postgres. Metadata and query history only. No agent to install and nothing written back.

2
The graph builds from real queries

Query history and dbt artifacts are parsed into table and column lineage. There is no separate query log ingestion job to schedule.

3
Count your source types

The graph shows exactly which systems feed your dashboards, which is the number that sets connector and lineage lines on an Alation quote.

4
Check a change before it ships

Pick a column and see every model and dashboard downstream. Freshness and schema alerts carry the same list.

Even if you go on to buy Alation, an hour with a working graph tells you how many connectors you need and which of them need column-level detail. Try the one-time demo or see the plans on the pricing page.

// FREQUENTLY ASKED

Alation data lineage questions buyers ask

Does Alation have data lineage?

Yes. Alation runs a lineage service, called Lineage V3, introduced in version 2021.4. It builds lineage from metadata extraction, query log ingestion, Compose query history and public APIs, and lets admins draw lineage by hand with Dataflow objects. For most sources, automatic lineage needs query logs ingested first.

Does Alation support column-level lineage?

Yes, for most major sources. Alation's support matrix lists table and column level lineage for Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks on AWS, PostgreSQL, Tableau and dbt Gen2. Alation also says column-level lineage depends on both the data source and the connector, and some connectors need an admin feature flag.

How much does Alation column-level lineage cost?

On the US federal GSA schedule, read on 19 October 2026, Column Level Lineage is an upgrade at $12,090.68 per connector per year, on top of $24,181.36 per connector. Five sources with column-level lineage on an Enterprise cloud server list at about $384,887 a year. Alation's 2026 UK card instead shows lineage in every tier.

Is lineage included in Alation's pricing?

It depends on which price list your quote follows. The US federal schedule still sells column-level lineage per connector. The pricing document Alation's reseller filed in the UK on 29 January 2026 ticks column-level lineage, business lineage and impact analysis in all four tiers from $60k a year. Ask for the answer in writing.

Does Alation need query logs for lineage?

For most sources, yes. Alation's documentation says automatic lineage calculation requires query history extracted and ingested with query log ingestion (QLI). SAP HANA and Databricks Unity Catalog are exceptions that read lineage from system tables during metadata extraction. Without QLI, you are left with manual lineage.

Does Alation lineage work with Power BI?

Through the Power BI Scanner connector, yes, at table and column level. It does not support on-premise Power BI, GCC High or China Cloud, and datasets modified through XMLA endpoints lose their lineage. The older Power BI on Azure connector has no lineage, and Power BI On-Premise is table level only.

What is a cheaper alternative to Alation for data lineage?

If lineage and impact analysis are the job, DataTrail builds column-level lineage from Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift or Postgres query history and dbt for $708 to $5,748 a year, self-serve with a read-only role. It does not replace Alation for a business glossary, stewardship or a company-wide catalog.

// HOW WE VERIFIED THIS

Where these numbers came from

The dollar lines come from GSA Advantage, the US federal government's ordering system, searched for Alation lineage items on 19 October 2026. Two schedule holders list the column-level lineage upgrade, Vertosoft at $12,090.68 and Merlin International at $11,848.87, and we quote both. The tier table comes from the pricing document CDW filed for G-Cloud 15 on the UK Digital Marketplace, dated 29 January 2026. The $60,000 entry price is Alation's AWS Marketplace listing, re-read the same day.

The limits are quoted from Alation's documentation pages for lineage, stored procedure lineage, the connector support matrix, the Open Connector Framework overview, the Power BI Scanner connector and the dbt connector, read on 19 October 2026. The pricing remark about AIOS is from Alation's news release of 17 September 2026. The worked quote is our arithmetic on the federal list. List prices are a starting point for negotiation, and a large account will pay less.
