Alation Pricing and Cost per Year, Seat and Connector in 2026
Alation prints no price on its own site, but two public documents do. AWS sells an undefined unit for $60,000 a year, and the US federal price list itemizes every server, connector and seat. Buyers report paying $77,526 to $302,223 a year.
Read-only connection. DataTrail never moves or mutates your data.
Alation costs $77,526 to $302,223 a year in buyer-reported contracts, with a median of $141,394 (Vendr). Its only self-published figure is $60,000 for 12 months on AWS Marketplace, for a unit it never defines. Its US federal price list is the line-by-line budget: $251,889.17 for the cloud server with two connectors, $24,181.36 per extra connector, $12,090.68 per connector for column-level lineage, $1,813.60 per Creator and $5.04 a month per Viewer.

Alation cost per year from four different sources
$60,000 sits below the cheapest contract any buyer reported to Vendr. Treat it as the price of a bounded starter package, not of the platform.
The median signed contract, $141,394, is less than a third of what the same price list adds up to for a five-source rollout. The gap is the negotiation, and it is large.
Build your number from the federal lines, then expect the quote to come in under it. If it does not, you are paying list.
Alation AWS Marketplace price, read from the rate card
A transactable AWS Marketplace listing has to carry a dollar amount, which is why quote-only vendors end up with a public price there. We rendered the listing in a headless browser and read the rate card out of the page data on 2 October 2026. Nothing has changed since September.
One dimension, "Alation Data Catalog", sold in Units. Only a 12-month term is offered, so there is no listed multi-year rate to compare against.
The dimension description reads "Subscription to Alation Data Catalog starting at" and ends. No user count, no source count, no asset limit.
The internal dimension key suggests a 25-user package, which matches what several buyer guides describe. Alation does not confirm it, so ask in writing.
Alation price list on the US GSA schedule
Vendors with no price on their website still file an itemized list when they sell to US federal agencies through a GSA schedule, and GSA Advantage shows it to anyone. Alation's is carried by the reseller Vertosoft under contract GS-35F-688GA. These are the lines that decide a budget, out of 23, read on 14 and 15 September 2026, each with Alation's own SKU.
| Line item | SKU | List price | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise Edition Cloud Subscription Server, includes 2 connectors | CL-ENTR-SUB-SW-129 | $251,889.17 | Per year, the platform line |
| Cloud Subscription, Sandbox | CL-ENTR-SUB-SW-139 | $30,226.70 | Non-production environment |
| High Availability Server, monthly | 2017-ENTR-SUB-SW-102-MO | $4,030.23 | $48,362.76 per year |
| Connector, per data source type | ENTR-SUB-SW-130 | $24,181.36 | Per year, beyond the two bundled |
| Column Level Lineage upgrade, per connector | CL-ENTR-SUB-SW-164 | $12,090.68 | Per year, on top of the connector |
| Named User, Creator | ENTR-SUB-SW-132 | $1,813.60 | Per user per year |
| Named User, Viewer, monthly | ENTR-SUB-SW-125-MO | $5.04 | $60.48 per viewer per year |
| Cloud Viewer Tier 2, up to 1,000 viewers | CL-ENTR-SUB-SW-144 | $580,352.64 | About $580 per viewer at full use |
| Professional Services, 40 hours | PRSV-FXP-PS-389 | $9,782.37 | $244.56 per hour |
| Professional Services, 120 hours | PRSV-FXP-PS-391 | $24,455.92 | $203.80 per hour |
| Alation Adopt (advisory, training, coaching) | PRSV-FXP-PS-342 | $20,151.13 | Fixed price |
| Training Pass Voucher, 1 student seat | PRSV-FXP-PS-370 | $2,518.89 | Paid up front |
The SKU reads "enables a single Alation connector to extract column level lineage". At $12,090.68 it adds half the connector price to every source. If lineage is why you are buying, model this line first; most estimates leave it out.
The per-user Viewer line is $60.48 a year. The cloud viewer tier for up to 1,000 readers divides to about $580 each at full use, 9.6 times more. Ask which viewer SKU your quote is built on.
The federal server line, $251,889.17, is 4.2 times the $60,000 AWS unit. Whatever Cloud_25 covers, it is a smaller thing than an Enterprise Edition deployment.
Forty hours divide to $244.56 an hour and 120 hours to $203.80, a 17% break you only see when you do the division. Year-one services are a real share of the first invoice.
What a five-source Alation rollout costs at list
Five connected sources with column-level lineage on each, 20 people who curate and 500 who read. That is an ordinary mid-size catalog program, priced only from Alation's own filed lines.
| Line item | Quantity | Unit price | Annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise Edition Cloud Server, 2 connectors included | 1 | $251,889.17 | $251,889.17 |
| Additional connectors, 5 sources in total | 3 | $24,181.36 | $72,544.08 |
| Column Level Lineage upgrade on all 5 connectors | 5 | $12,090.68 | $60,453.40 |
| Creator seats | 20 | $1,813.60 | $36,272.00 |
| Viewer seats, per-user line | 500 | $60.48 | $30,240.00 |
| Total at list | $451,398.65 |
Set that against the Vendr median of $141,394 and the picture is clear: list is a ceiling and almost nobody pays it. The useful part is the shape. Connectors grow after signature, one more BI tool and then a second warehouse, and the renewal arrives larger than the contract without anyone deciding to spend more. If your finance team does not catch creeping software spend as it happens, connector lines are exactly the kind that go unnoticed for four quarters.
Alation pricing vs Collibra and Atlan
Built only from documents the vendors put in public. Which one looks cheapest depends entirely on which row you care about.
| Alation | Collibra | Atlan | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price on own website | No | No | No |
| AWS Marketplace, 12 months | $60,000, entitlement unstated | $170,000, entitlement unstated | No price, private offer only |
| Entry platform line on a filed price list | $251,889.17 (server, 2 connectors) | $166,346.53 (Standard) | £110,000 (about $148,700) |
| Extra connector | $24,181.36 | $9,874.02 | £12,000 (about $16,200) |
| Read-only users | $5.04 per month | No charge | £60 per year |
| Column-level lineage | $12,090.68 per connector, paid upgrade | Custom Technical Lineage $10,861.42 | Included |
| Buyer-reported contracts (Vendr) | $77,526 to $302,223, median $141,394 | See Collibra pricing | See Atlan pricing |
On AWS, Alation is the cheapest of the three by a wide margin. On the filed lists it has the highest platform line and the most expensive connector, while being cheaper per power user. Collibra charges nothing for readers, which on a large organization can outweigh every other line. The full filed cards are broken down on Collibra pricing and Atlan pricing, and the head-to-heads are in Alation vs Collibra and Atlan vs Alation.
Four questions that turn an Alation quote into a budget
What does Cloud_25 cover? Users, sources and assets in the $60,000 unit, and whether a private offer uses the same unit.
Per-class seat rates. Creator and Viewer separately, and which viewer SKU applies to a cloud tenant.
Connectors in year two. Price the sources you will have in two years, with the lineage upgrade on each.
Services, separately. Year-one services are often close to the license and do not recur. Get them as their own line.
Where DataTrail fits for teams pricing Alation
Alation is a capable catalog. If your organization needs a discovery layer, a business glossary and a stewardship program across hundreds of readers, that is what it is built for, and six figures is the honest shape of that purchase.
Plenty of teams pricing a catalog are not running a governance program, though. They got here because a renamed column broke three dashboards, or because nobody could say what a table feeds before it was dropped. On Alation's own price list, answering that question means a connector at $24,181.36 plus a lineage upgrade at $12,090.68, per source, every year.
DataTrail connects to Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift or Postgres with a read-only role and builds column-level lineage from query history and your dbt project. Open a column and see what breaks downstream before you merge, with schema change alerts on every table. Starter is $59 a month billed yearly, Team $179 and Scale $479 with unlimited team members. A full year of Scale, $5,748, costs less than one Alation connector's lineage upgrade. See the pricing page.
What DataTrail does not do: it has no business glossary, certification workflow or stewardship program. If those are the requirement, shortlist Alation against the other catalogs on our data catalog tools page and the Alation alternatives comparison.
Alation pricing questions buyers ask
How much does Alation cost per year?
Buyers who have signed report Alation contracts of $77,526 to $302,223 a year, with a median of $141,394 (Vendr). At list, Alation's US federal price list puts the cloud server with two connectors at $251,889.17 a year, so a five-source rollout with 20 Creators and 500 Viewers adds up to about $451,400 before any discount.
Does Alation publish its pricing?
Not on alation.com, which routes every pricing question to sales. Two public documents carry real prices: the AWS Marketplace listing, which sells one unit at $60,000 for 12 months, and the US GSA schedule filed by reseller Vertosoft under contract GS-35F-688GA, which itemizes 23 Alation line items in dollars.
What is the Alation AWS Marketplace price?
The Alation Data Intelligence Platform listing sells one dimension, "Alation Data Catalog", at $60,000.00 for 12 months, re-read on 2 October 2026. No 24 or 36 month term is offered. The description reads "Subscription to Alation Data Catalog starting at" and stops there, so the listing never says how many users or sources the unit covers.
Is Alation cheaper than Collibra?
On AWS Marketplace, yes: $60,000 against Collibra's $170,000. On the two federal price lists, which compare like for like, Alation is the dearer platform, $251,889.17 for its cloud server against $166,346.53 for Collibra Standard, and an Alation connector costs $24,181.36 against $9,874.02. Alation is cheaper per power user; Collibra charges nothing for viewers.
How much does Alation column-level lineage cost?
Column-level lineage is a separate SKU on Alation's federal price list, CL-ENTR-SUB-SW-164, at $12,090.68 per connector per year. It sits on top of the $24,181.36 connector line, so lineage adds 50% to every source you connect. Five sources with lineage on all of them cost $60,453.40 a year for lineage alone.
Is Alation cheaper than Atlan?
At the platform line, no. Atlan's filed UK entry platform is about $148,700 a year against Alation's $251,889.17 federal server line, and Atlan includes column-level lineage while Alation sells it per connector. Alation is the only one of the two with a public AWS price, and its $60,000 unit is far below anything Atlan has filed.
Does Alation offer a free trial?
There is no self-serve free plan or signup that puts you in a working Alation catalog. Trials and demo environments are arranged through sales. If you need to see your own lineage the same day without a sales cycle, DataTrail has a one-time demo and plans with the price on the page.
What is a cheaper alternative to Alation for data lineage?
If lineage and impact analysis are what you need, DataTrail builds column-level lineage from Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift or Postgres query history and dbt for $708 to $5,748 a year, with unlimited team members. For a full glossary and stewardship program, compare Alation with Collibra, Atlan and DataHub.
Where these numbers came from
The AWS Marketplace page draws its prices with JavaScript, so plain requests return nothing. We rendered it in a headless browser and read the rate card from the page data on 2 October 2026:
L=aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp chrome --headless --dump-dom \ https://$L/prodview-ylge6fq43dtg6 # Cloud_25 "Alation Data Catalog" # P12M 60000.00, no P24M or P36M
The federal lines come from the GSA Advantage listing for contract GS-35F-688GA (Vertosoft), read on 14 and 15 September 2026. The signed-contract range and median come from Vendr's Alation page, which aggregates purchases it has seen; they are third-party figures and labeled that way. Collibra and Atlan figures are documented with their sources on their own pricing pages here.
