Snowflake data governance tools split into one you already pay for and several you would add. Snowflake Horizon Catalog has no license fee, but its quality monitoring, lineage and masking need Enterprise Edition, which raises every credit from $2.00 to $3.00 at On Demand list in AWS US East. The add-ons publish real list prices on AWS Marketplace: Alation $60,000 a year, Immuta $96,000 and Collibra $170,000. Atlan's filed rate card starts at £110,000, about $148,700, before seats. Buy one when governance has to reach past Snowflake.

Data governance lead comparing vendor contracts next to a laptop

Page one of Google for this query is a run of explainers, two of them written by a vendor on the list below, and not one of them prints a price. That is a strange way to help someone choose software. Every number in this post comes from a price list you can open yourself: the Snowflake Service Consumption Table effective 2 October 2026, AWS Marketplace listings re-read on 6 October 2026, and procurement filings for the vendors that keep their own pricing pages at "contact sales".

AWS listings read 6 October 2026 (Alation, Immuta) and 5 October 2026 (Collibra). Atlan figure from its own UK G-Cloud rate card, converted at the 10 September 2026 rate. All are list prices before negotiation.

The spread is the first thing worth noticing. The cheapest add-on catalog with a public price costs $60,000 a year and the most expensive $170,000, and neither number includes implementation. Against that, Horizon costs nothing extra once you are on Enterprise, which is why the honest first question is not "which tool" but "what does Horizon fail to cover for us".

What Snowflake Horizon gives you before you buy anything

Horizon Catalog is the governance layer built into Snowflake. It covers object tagging, sensitive data classification, dynamic masking and row access policies, the Trust Center for security posture, data metric functions for quality, and column-level lineage across Snowflake objects. For an estate where ingestion, transformation and consumption all happen inside Snowflake, that is a real governance program with no extra vendor.

The cost hides in the edition and the meter. Masking, lineage and data quality monitoring all require Enterprise Edition, and Enterprise reprices every credit you burn, not only the governance ones: $3.00 a credit against $2.00 on Standard at On Demand list in AWS US East, a 50 percent uplift on the whole warehouse bill. On top of that, the serverless governance features bill their own credits. Snowflake's consumption table sets Sensitive Data Classification at a multiplier of 0.9, Trust Center at 1 and scheduled data quality checks at 2, each per compute-hour. We priced the quality side in detail on our Snowflake observability tools page.

Snowflake is also buying its way toward the catalog market. It announced a definitive agreement to acquire Select Star in November 2025 to extend Horizon Catalog, and Select Star's pricing page now redirects to its home page. If Select Star was on your shortlist, treat it as part of Horizon from here on. Our Snowflake Horizon Catalog comparison lists what Horizon documents as out of scope, including the one-year lineage retention window.

Which data governance tool is best for Snowflake?

For a Snowflake-only estate already on Enterprise Edition, Horizon is the best tool because it is enforced inside the engine and costs nothing extra. Add Immuta when access policy is the hard problem, Alation or Atlan when business users need a catalog and glossary across several platforms, and Collibra when governance is a formal enterprise program with stewardship workflows and regulators asking for evidence.

That answer turns on three questions. Does your data live only in Snowflake? Who consumes the governance, engineers or business users? And is the hard part knowing what data you have, or controlling who sees it? Each add-on tool is strongest on exactly one of those.

Immuta vs Snowflake native masking for access control

Snowflake's masking and row access policies are SQL objects you write and attach per column or table. They work well at small scale and they are free beyond Enterprise Edition. They get hard to manage when hundreds of tables need the same rule, when the rule depends on user attributes held in an identity provider, or when the same policy has to hold in Databricks too.

That is the gap Immuta sells into. Its AWS Marketplace listing sells 960 Immuta Units for $96,000 a year, and the listing describes the unit as a monthly metric based on user subscription count and data store type. On the US federal schedule Immuta lists $98,740.55 a year per data platform connector, which we broke down line by line in Immuta pricing per connector and user. If one Snowflake account and a few dozen policies is the whole job, native policies are the cheaper answer by about $96,000.

Alation, Atlan or Collibra on Snowflake

All three connect to Snowflake, read its metadata and pull in lineage. The difference is in what they cost and who they are built for.

Alation is the cheapest of the three at list, $60,000 a year on AWS Marketplace, and the listing sells "Alation Data Catalog" in units without defining a unit, so expect the real quote to move with users and connectors. Our Alation pricing page has the federal price list and the per-connector lines.

Atlan does not publish a price on its website or on AWS Marketplace, where it only offers private quotes. Its UK government filing does: a platform fee from £110,000 to £300,000 a year plus seats from £60 to £2,388 and £1,000 per connector a month. Atlan is a Snowflake partner and markets heavily to Snowflake shops. Details on our Atlan pricing page.

Collibra is the most expensive at $170,000 for 12 months, and its 24 and 36 month terms list at exactly two and three times that, so a longer contract buys no discount at list. That is worth knowing before procurement starts. If you do sign a multi-year order form, keep the renewal date and any price escalator in your contract management software rather than in someone's inbox, because enterprise renewals often carry a notice window measured in months. The full rate card is on our Collibra pricing page.

Do I need Collibra if I have Snowflake Horizon?

Not if Snowflake is your only data platform and your governance consumers are engineers. Collibra earns its price when governance spans several platforms, when business stewards need workflows and approvals, and when an auditor wants a documented policy trail. A company running Snowflake plus SAP, Salesforce and an on-premises database is a Collibra buyer; a company running Snowflake and dbt usually is not.

Lineage is where Snowflake governance stops

Every tool above claims lineage, and they mean different things. Horizon's lineage covers Snowflake objects and keeps one year of history. It does not show the dbt model that built a table, the Airflow task that loaded it or the Power BI report that reads it. The catalogs pull lineage from many sources but sell it as part of a six-figure platform.

That is the narrow job we built DataTrail for. It connects to Snowflake with a read-only role, parses ACCESS_HISTORY and QUERY_HISTORY into column-level lineage, follows each column into dbt and the BI layer, and shows what a schema change will break before it ships. It is not a business glossary or an access-control product, and it does not try to be one. For teams whose governance question is "what depends on this column", it starts at $59 a month billed yearly on a flat plan instead of a catalog contract. The Snowflake-specific setup is on Snowflake data lineage.

How much does data governance software cost for a Snowflake team?

At published US list prices, a Snowflake team pays nothing extra for Horizon beyond Enterprise Edition, about $60,000 a year for Alation, $96,000 for Immuta, roughly $148,700 plus seats for Atlan and $170,000 for Collibra. Implementation, extra connectors and seats come on top. Flat-priced lineage tools sit far below that range, from under $1,000 a year.
