Monte Carlo Data Pricing: Data Observability Pricing per Credit, per Table and per Year

Monte Carlo's pricing page shows four tiers and no dollar amounts. Two public order forms on the same website print the per-credit rate, and the product docs publish the full consumption rate card. Put together, they give a real cost per table per year that nobody on page one of Google has computed. Every figure below is read from those documents on 15 September 2026.

Monte Carlo charges $0.18 per credit on its Start tier and $0.28 per credit on Scale, and a Table Monitor consumes 1.75 credits a day for each of the first 1,000 tables, so 1,000 monitored tables cost about $114,975 a year on Start and $178,850 on Scale. The per-credit rates come from two order forms published on montecarlo.ai and the consumption rates from Monte Carlo's own documentation, which both order forms incorporate by reference. Enterprise and Business Critical rates are not published. The only other public dollar figure is the AWS Marketplace listing, which sells one "Monte Carlo Credit" contract unit at $50,000.00 for 12 months without saying how many credits that is.

Monte Carlo pricing tiers and the credit rate on each

The pricing page explains the model in one sentence: "Buy credits and consume them based on our Consumption Rates. Cost per credit depends on the tier that makes sense for you." It then declines to print the cost per credit. The Start and Scale order forms, both dated 2 August 2025 and last modified 23 April 2026, print it.

$0.28 against $0.18, for the same consumption rates. What the extra buys is unlimited users, SSO, lake and database sources, and a support SLA. Nothing on the rate card gets cheaper per credit as you move up a tier.

The order forms are public but unlinked

Neither order form is linked from the pricing page, and neither appears in montecarlo.ai's sitemap. They are reachable by URL, they render, and they carry the vendor's own words. That is why nearly every estimate online misses them.

Two live pricing pages disagree on the meter

The current page says Start is "pay per monitor, up to 1,000". An older Monte Carlo plan page, still live on info.montecarlo.ai, says "pay per table up to 1,000 tables". The rate card resolves it: the meter is the monitor, and one Table Monitor covers one table.

Monte Carlo cost per table: 1.75 credits a day, falling in brackets

One Table Monitor covers freshness, volume and schema change for one table or view, and it is the item that dominates almost every bill. Consumption is measured once a day per warehouse on the count of tables with a Table Monitor, and disabled monitors consume nothing. The rate card is marginal: each bracket applies only to the tables inside it.

Credits per year are credits per day times 365. The Start tier is capped at 1,000 monitors on its order form, so larger estates are shown at the Scale rate only. The per-table column shows Start / Scale where both apply, and the Scale blended rate above the cap.

The first thousand tables carry the bill

A thousand tables cost $178,850 a year on Scale. The next thousand add $111,398. The thousand after that add $69,496. By the fifth thousand a table consumes 0.27 credits a day, under a sixth of the first bracket, and beyond 10,000 tables each additional one is about $1.02 a year. Monte Carlo is priced to make wide coverage cheap at the margin and expensive at the start.

Overlapping monitors are not double-charged

The docs are explicit that a table included in several Table Monitors consumes credits once, with the cost split fractionally across those monitors in the chargeback export. What does multiply is the opt-in layer: every Metric, Validation and Query Performance monitor you enable on a table is metered on top of its Table Monitor.

Table Monitors are the floor. The rate card meters ten more things, and three of them became billable during 2026. The dollar columns apply the two published credit rates; a monitor's schedule frequency does not change its consumption, and only enabled monitors are counted.

Two details from the fine print that change a forecast. The Troubleshooting Agent and PR Agent bill in blocks of 20: whether you run 5 or 20 investigations in a month, 2,000 credits are consumed, and unused investigations do not roll over. And the PII Agent's detection runs as SQL inside your warehouse, so its warehouse compute is billed by Snowflake or Databricks on top of the credits.

Version 1.1 priced agents in dollars. Version 2.1 prices them in credits, and on Scale that is a raise

Monte Carlo still publishes its previous rate card, Consumption Rates Version 1.1, which counted "Table Days" for monitoring and charged the agents in flat dollars drawn from committed spend. Version 2.1 converts every one of those to credits. Because the credit rate differs by tier, the same agent now costs different amounts on different tiers, and on Scale most of them went up.

The Version 1.1 agent table implies a cheaper credit than the order forms print

Under 1.1, Agent Observability at Small size was $20 a day on Start and $40 on Scale. Under 2.1 the same entitlement is 200 credits a day. Dividing gives $0.10 and $0.20 per credit, against $0.18 and $0.28 on the 2025 order forms. We publish both and reconcile neither: the order form is the document you would sign, so it governs, and the gap is worth raising with your account team.

Three billable dates in 2026

Agent Observability, billable from 1 May 2026. Triage Agent, billable above 20 alerts a month from 1 September 2026 (automatic triage was free through 31 August). Cost and Performance Agent, from free preview to metered use from 1 October. If your renewal quote was built before those dates, the agents are where the forecast is most likely to be wrong.

A worked example: 1,000 Snowflake tables on the Scale tier

Take a mid-size US data team on Snowflake with dbt: a thousand production tables under Table Monitors, two hundred Metric Monitors on the fields the business watches (the median monitor tracks one metric), fifty Custom SQL validations with no variables, five Query Performance Monitors on the expensive models, and a team that runs the Troubleshooting Agent on twenty alerts a month. Nothing exotic, and it is the shape Monte Carlo's own examples describe.

That is $226,450 at list with no discount, and 79% of it is the Table Monitors. The same estate on Start is not possible, because Start is capped at 1,000 monitors and this one runs 1,255. A smaller Start deployment, 500 tables with a hundred metric monitors, twenty validations and two performance monitors, comes to 1,055 credits a day, about 385,000 a year, or $69,300 at $0.18. Both numbers sit inside the $30,000 to $250,000 ranges that deal-data sites publish for Monte Carlo, which is reassuring, except that those sites cannot tell you which monitors put you at which end. The rate card can.

What the AWS Marketplace listing says, and what it does not

Monte Carlo's AWS Marketplace listing is the one place it publishes a contract-sized dollar figure. Re-read from the rendered listing on 15 September 2026, it sells a single dimension with the key Data_Obs and the display name "Monte Carlo Credit" at $50,000.00 for a 12-month contract at quantity one. Only a 12-month duration is offered, so there is no 24 or 36 month price to check for a multi-year discount. The listing carries an auto-renew badge, and its support term states that "all fees are non-cancellable and non-refundable except as required by law."

What the listing does not say is how many credits a $50,000 unit contains. It also attaches a usage-based overage rate to the same dimension, "Monte Carlo Additional Usage Credit" at $0.01 per unit. That figure cannot be a credit at either published rate, since a credit is $0.18 or $0.28, so the Marketplace "unit" and the rate-card "credit" are not the same thing, and the listing never bridges them. If the contract unit were denominated at the Start rate, $50,000 would fund about 277,800 credits, roughly 435 table-years of monitoring. At the Scale rate it would fund about 178,600 credits, roughly 280 table-years. Monte Carlo does not say which, so treat those as arithmetic, not entitlement, and ask before you buy through the Marketplace.

The same pattern shows up across the category, and the contrast is the useful part. Bigeye's listing states its entitlement in tables. Datafold's states it in developers. Acceldata's names its meters. Monte Carlo's states a dollar amount for an undefined quantity, and then, unlike Alation or Collibra, publishes the consumption rates and the per-credit price elsewhere on its own site. At 100 tables Monte Carlo is the cheaper of the two enterprise platforms

Bigeye's Starter package is $45,000 for 100 tables. Monte Carlo Scale for 100 tables is $17,885 and Start is $11,498. That reverses the usual assumption that the category leader is the expensive option. Bigeye's number is a fixed package with a stated entitlement, though, and Monte Carlo's grows with every opt-in monitor.

The metered model rewards a narrow scope

Because Monte Carlo bills per enabled monitor, the cheapest deployment is the one that monitors the tables that matter and leaves staging untouched. Teams that turn on everything in the RAW, PREP and PROD databases, which is how at least one public customer handbook describes its rollout, pay for the whole estate. The bracketed rate card softens that, but only after the first thousand tables.

Paying per monitored table for lineage you could have flat

Monte Carlo is the category leader for a reason, and this page is not an argument that it is overpriced. If you need machine-learned anomaly detection across warehouses, lakes, streaming pipelines and AI agents, with a fleet of agents to triage and troubleshoot what it finds, the credit model is the price of that breadth, and the bracketed rate card is genuinely generous past the first few thousand tables. Plenty of enterprise data teams get their money's worth.

The mismatch shows up on a specific kind of team. They came to the pricing page because a column changed and three dashboards broke, or because nobody could say what a table feeds before deleting it, or because a model went stale overnight and the first people to notice were in the weekly business review. Those are lineage and change-impact problems. Lineage is included on every Monte Carlo tier, but it is not sold on its own: to get it you enable Table Monitors, and every table you enable is 1.75 credits a day. A thousand tables of "we just want to see what feeds what" is $178,850 a year on Scale.

Datatrail is built the other way round. How much does Monte Carlo data observability cost?

Monte Carlo charges $0.18 per credit on its Start tier and $0.28 per credit on Scale, according to the two order forms published on its own website. A Table Monitor consumes 1.75 credits a day for each of the first 1,000 tables, so 1,000 monitored tables cost about $114,975 a year on Start and $178,850 on Scale before any metric monitors, SQL validations or agents are added. Enterprise and Business Critical rates are not published.

What is a Monte Carlo credit?

A credit is the single consumption unit Monte Carlo bills in. Every monitor draws down credits once a day at a rate set by its type: 1.75 credits for a Table Monitor in the first bracket, 1.0 per metric for a Metric Monitor, 2 for a Custom SQL monitor, 20 for a Query Performance Monitor. Agents draw credits per use, for example 2,000 credits per 20 troubleshooting investigations. The dollar value of a credit depends on your tier, and the published values are $0.18 on Start and $0.28 on Scale.

Does Monte Carlo publish pricing?

Yes, though not where you would look. The pricing page at montecarlo.ai/request-for-pricing lists four tiers with no dollar amounts. The full consumption rate card lives in the product docs, and two public order forms on montecarlo.ai print the per-credit rate for Start ($0.18) and Scale ($0.28). Those order forms are not linked from the pricing page and are not in the site's sitemap, which is why almost every third-party estimate misses them.

How much does Monte Carlo cost per table?

Between $114.97 and $178.85 per table per year for the first 1,000 tables, which is 1.75 credits a day at $0.18 or $0.28. The rate card is bracketed, so the marginal cost falls sharply with scale: tables 1,001 to 2,000 consume 1.09 credits a day, tables 4,001 to 5,000 consume 0.27, and everything beyond 10,000 consumes 0.010. At 10,000 tables the blended rate on Scale is about $47 per table per year.

What does $50,000 buy on the Monte Carlo AWS Marketplace listing?

The listing sells one dimension, "Monte Carlo Credit", at $50,000.00 for 12 months at quantity one, and does not say how many credits that is. At the published Start rate $50,000 would fund about 277,800 credits, roughly 435 table-years of monitoring; at the Scale rate it funds about 178,600 credits, roughly 280 table-years. The listing offers only a 12-month term, auto-renews, and states that all fees are non-cancellable and non-refundable except as required by law.

Is Monte Carlo cheaper than Bigeye?

At list, on a per-table basis, yes. Bigeye's AWS Marketplace Starter package is $45,000 a year for 100 monitored tables, $450 per table. Monte Carlo's Scale rate for 100 tables is 175 credits a day, about $17,885 a year, or $178.85 per table. The gap narrows at 300 tables, where Bigeye's $75,000 package works out to $250 per table against Monte Carlo's $178.85, and Bigeye's package includes a stated entitlement while Monte Carlo's bill floats with every monitor you enable.

What is the minimum Monte Carlo contract?

The order forms state monthly billing with payment due on receipt and credit card payment available, and print no minimum commitment. The only contract-size figure Monte Carlo publishes anywhere is the $50,000 twelve-month unit on AWS Marketplace. The current pricing page says you can either pay as you go or commit to usage for discounts, so a small Start deployment at $0.18 per credit with a few hundred tables is possible on paper without a six-figure commitment.

What changed in Monte Carlo pricing in 2026?

Four dated changes are on the rate card. Agent Observability became billable on 1 May 2026, Triage Agent became billable above 20 alerts a month on 1 September 2026, and the Cost and Performance Agent moves from free preview to metered use on 1 October. Underneath those, the billing model itself moved from Version 1.1, which counted Table Days and priced agents in flat dollars, to Version 2.1, which prices everything in credits. On Scale that repricing moved the Troubleshooting Agent from $500 to $560 per 20 investigations.

Does Monte Carlo charge for lineage?

Lineage is listed as included on every tier, from Start upward, and there is no lineage line on the consumption rate card. What you pay for is the monitoring on top of it: the Table Monitors that watch freshness, volume and schema, and the metric, validation and performance monitors you opt into. Lineage without monitoring is not something Monte Carlo sells separately.

How does Monte Carlo pricing compare to Datatrail?

Monte Carlo meters every table you monitor, so 1,000 tables on Scale is about $178,850 a year. Datatrail is a flat monthly plan, $99, $299 or $799 a month depending on how many sources and warehouses you connect, with column-level lineage, freshness monitoring, schema-change alerts and impact analysis included and no per-table meter. Monte Carlo covers far more monitor types, agents and integrations; Datatrail is the right shape when lineage and change impact are the problem and the bill needs to be predictable.

Four documents, all public, all on Monte Carlo's own domains or on AWS Marketplace, all read on 15 September 2026. The per-credit rates are on two order-form pages published 2 August 2025 and last modified 23 April 2026. An earlier version of the Scale page that search engines still quote in snippets read $0.25 per credit; the live page reads $0.28.

The AWS Marketplace figures come from dumping the rendered DOM of listing prodview-hikicsfohm3gg with headless Chrome and reading the embedded rate cards, since the page returns nothing to a plain fetch. Comparison prices for Bigeye, Datafold, Sifflet and Acceldata were read the same way on the dates shown, and Metaplane's from its pricing page on 14 September 2026.

Three limits, stated plainly. Enterprise and Business Critical credit rates are not published anywhere we can find, so the two largest tiers cannot be computed. The dollar totals are list: Monte Carlo's pricing page says committed usage earns discounts, and enterprise deals are negotiated, so what you pay will be lower than what is printed here. And the rate card is versioned and has changed at least once; the figures are correct for Version 2.1 as read on 15 September 2026, and the order forms name a "successor URL" clause that lets the rates move. Where our figures and an order form disagree, the order form governs your contract. What this page gives you is the number to walk in with.
